Tracy risking his life for an OWL
Anatortes OWL 1
Anacortes OWL 2

A picture of the proprietor of EME Systems, Tracy Allen, daring his life on high seas to install the weather station at the Port of Anacortes. The weather station at Anacortes consists of an OWL enclosure, 3 underwater quantum sensors from Li-Cor, 3 UTA's to amplify the Li-Cor signals, two temperature sensors and a Davis anemometer. The OWL, UTA's and anemometer are mounted on top of the 8 foot post where Tracy is working. The mounting on the top of the post was custom welded by port worker Jason (working on the dock).

Above is a close-up of the OWL enclosure and solar panel on top of the mounting platform. The UTA's are located inside of the OWL box and are therefore not visible as individual units. This mounting on the interior side of the enclosure door has proven to be very useful in a number of cases.

Another angle of the OWL enclosure detailing the cable inputs from the underwater quantum sensors. The sensors are taking measurements in the bay in the background. The white spikes on top of the tube through which the cables run deter birds from finding roosts there.

The picture above illustrates the area where the weather station is positioned. The three underwater quantum sensors are placed strategically in the foreground body of water. The OWL station on the top of the post (first picture in this series) is on a floating dock at the end of the row of pylons jutting out towards us at right. The smokestack in the center of the picture is almost all that remains of an old paper mill. The weather station is in place to help understand the lack of sea grass growth in this body of water.

Above is a picture of the project site from ground-level. The smokestack is apparent on the right side of the picture. At the end of the row of pylons which extends out into the sound, there is a floating dock, above which the OWL weather station is located.

Gian Allen-Piccolo, son of Tracy Allen and part of the EME Anacortes team, gives the camera a big cheese from under a bridge near Anacortes.

Above is a statue that the EME systems crew came across during an after-work excursion. The statue represents a local Native American story about the princess of the sea who sacrifices herself in order to bring a plenty of fish to her people.
